Flashback trojan hits Macs – Info and fix

You have probably heard about the trojan that have recently been hitting Mac personal computers. What’s really comforting, is that the vulnerability is not related to the OS X, but to Java, and is exploited to start a backdoor trojan. I have read this article on Mashable, including a step-by-step guide on how to find out if you’ve been affected, how to fix, and how to immune your beloved mac against this nasty trojan.

I followed the steps and found that my MacBook nor my iMac were affected (Dear Jacqui, It’s still crystal clear with no dead pixels… *yet* :P ). The checkup process is easy, run two scripts that are available for download (Linked to Mashable’s article). Getting a “does not exist” message means that your mac is fine. And yeah.. Don’t forget to apply the new Mac OS X Java updates to get rid of the Java vulnerability.

Dear X-Cite.. seriously??

Let’s face it.. everyone of us is somehow addicted to a specific category when it comes to shopping regardless of the pricing of the item in mind, But the incredibly “crazy prices” at some electronics stores would really make you consider comparing prices (knowing that they’re not posted somewhere online, you’ll have to stop by every store you may know).. or maybe just forgetting about buying what you’ve been looking for!

In my case.. it’s the Apple Thunderbolt display 27″

Because I multi-task most of the time, it is impossible for me to work with one screen; I work on 2 browsers, Code editor (Multi window; for PHP, JS, CSS, and HTML), phpMyAdmin (MySQL management), and a debugger… all at once! so here comes the need of getting an extra display for my 27″ iMac. I’ll compare the local prices with the original Apple store price:

Apple Thunderbolt
display 27″

Apple store (online) iCity Blink.com.kw X-Cite Alghanim
Price $999 = KD 276 KD 365 KD 319

KD 498
KD 399 (discounted)

Have you noticed X-Cite’s pricing? the announced price is KD 498!! Seriously?? This is what exactly happened with me when I went to Alrai showroom and found the display I was looking for, actually couldn’t believe the numbers I was reading on the price tag! KD 498?? Is it gold plated or what!? So I called the salesman who confirmed the price to me, and started calculating the “discounted price”.. “Sir, it’ll be 400 KD after discount” he said.. “400 sharp?” I asked.. “naah, 399 KD something” he replied… woohoo! I feel much better now with the great discount!!!

That got me to think about the profit margin of every single item they sell; if Blink is selling the display for KD 319 with at least KD 30 profit, then X-Cite is making almost KD 110 profit for the same display, which is almost PLUS 40% profit margin if compared to the original Apple store price! And the same goes for iCity with a – sometimes- smaller margin

one word.. greedy!

iCity: MacBook Pro new prices

I came across this Ad in alwatan newspaper today, I called them to the prices:

2.0 GHz = 599 KD
2.2 GHz = 699 KD

Steve Jobs’ resignation letter

Yes it’s true as you have all heard, Steve Jobs leaves his position as Apple CEO and remains as a chairman. below is his resignation letter:

“To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community: I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee. As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role. I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve”

I hope Tim Cook keeps the Apple fresh.. as it always was

Apple to launch iOS powered TV display!?

It has been rumored for a very long time, a TV apple display! “The former Apple executive, speaking with us on condition of anonymity, told us that that the company’s biggest upcoming product launch will be one that hasn’t been made official yet — Apple has plans to enter the TV business.” – DailyTech. The new display is said to be large with an Apple-TV built in, but will not be developed in-house as other Apple products.

Interesting, I’m definitely getting one of those.. if launched soon. the launch is expected to be on next fall.

As I have read on The Ventilation Dock in the early hours of today’s morning.. Zain has officially released the iPhone 4 into all branches with four different packages. Both white & black iPhones are available. The interesting thing is that it’s not limited to iPhone 4 only, the deal signed by both Apple & Zain includes any upcoming iPhones!

iPhone 4 quick review

I promised to post a full review about iPhone 4, but the videos I have recorded do not seem to work for some reason. Anyway, I had some captures and few notes, specially in regards to the so-called antenna problem.

I wish I could have posted a more detailed review… but this is what I currently have:

  • Shape
  • Installation
  • Performance
  • Antenna and reception
